E-Lecture - Types of soil

In general, there are three main types of soil after the word soil add the word notably, sand, clay and silt soil.

(i) Sandy soil

  • contains large soil particles.
  • particles packed loosely together.
  • particles have greater air spaces and are well-aerated.

(ii) Clay Soil

  • contains very small soil particles.
  • particles are packed tightly together.
  • particles have smaller air space and not well-aerated.

(iii) Silt Soil

  • is smooth unlike clay soil which is sticky.
  • drains more water unlike clay soil.
  • retains more water unlike sand soil it.

(iv) Loam soil

  • is a mixture of sand and clay particles
  • contains remains of decayed organisms which form humus.

(v) Humus is

  • composed of the remains of dead organisms and their waste products
  • formed at the soil surface
  • Used to improve the texture of soils.

For instance, if humus is added to clay soil, it improves aerations.
